I was born in a family with high respect for sports, movement and staying active. My father's career started out in the sports industry, and my mom was a part-time aerobics instructor in the 80s and 90s.
A chubby child raised on grandma’s cooking, I had challenges with body image despite my active lifestyle: an aspiring dancer, followed by years of figure building in my teens, to – gasp! - gaining the “freshman 25” in college and wondering what happened.
Fast forward through years of graduate school, late nights and many glasses of wine to help get through school work. My extra weight was stubborn, I never seemed to get ahead, and I started believing that I wouldn’t return to my “younger” look. I was still active – lifting at the gym, running on a treadmill, completing bike races... but nothing was helping with weight loss!
I was at a stall.
Until I took a deeper dive into what I was putting into my body in the form of nutrition. It was a completely new world – scary in its discovery but exciting in the realization that I finally had control over how my body reacted to food and exercise. Knowledge is power.
Once we make a decision to change, the Universe aligns a path.
In 2011, I stumbled upon a deal offering one month of body-shredding bootcamp-style workouts – something I’d never done before. A deal that was supposed to last a month turned into a life-long commitment to healthy living. My personal transformation at the bootcamp studio inspired me to dive deeper into the fascinating world of fitness. A student turned instructor in a little over a year, I obtained my instructor certification and joined the training team.
During my transformation at the studio I arrived at another discovery: nutrition and exercise went hand in hand like best friends. I could work out every day.. but the engine doesn't fire on all cylinders if it runs on the wrong kind of fuel, regardless of how many times I rev it up by exercise.
It was just the tip of the iceberg. Soon I came to realize that wellness extends beyond nutrition + exercise. Our mind, body and spirit are equally important. One can eat all the kale and broccoli in the world and exercise every day - and still be unhappy.
Holistic Health was the answer.
My mindset shifted. I fine-tuned my diet, started listening to my body and evaluated my surroundings and personal relationships. The impact on my life was profound, and I decided I wanted to share it with others.
